Since the 17th century, the City of Osaka has been a major center for the culture of the common people, as typically exemplified by Bunraku, a form of puppet theater. In a Bunraku show, the movements of each puppet are controlled jointly by three operators while a chanter called the Tayu sings a drama script to the accompaniment of the three-stringed Shamisen. The National Bunraku Theater is Japan’s only theater dedicated to Bunraku. The theater can be easily reached by walking from subway stations Nihonbashi or Namba.
